About Esteem Psychology

Reaching out to a psychologist for the first time can feel like a big step, and choosing the right one for you matters. Esteem Psychology is a team of clinical psychologists in Newcastle supporting children, adolescents and adults through life’s harder moments.

Who We Are

Esteem Psychology is a clinical psychology practice based on Hunter Street in the Newcastle CBD. Our team of AHPRA-endorsed clinical psychologists provides evidence-informed therapy for children, adolescents and adults. Everything we do is guided by four principles: compassion, respect, collaboration and individualisation. Whatever brings you to us, our aim is to offer a safe and supportive environment where you can explore what you are facing and work towards meaningful change at a pace that feels right for you.

Our Approach to Psychological Care

Good therapy starts with feeling understood. We take time to get to know you, your history and your goals before shaping a plan together. Our psychologists draw on evidence-based approaches and tailor them to your individual needs, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all method. Therapy is collaborative, so you stay an active part of every decision. We check in regularly to make sure the support stays relevant, and we adjust as your circumstances and goals change over time. Individual needs and outcomes vary.

Meet Our Clinical Psychology Team

Esteem Psychology is home to a team of clinical psychologists, each endorsed by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Our clinicians include Ailie O’Flaherty, Sam Wolfe, Alex Provost, Belinda Edwards, Brendon Knott and Dr Liz Ditton. Every psychologist brings their own areas of interest and experience across different ages and presentations, so we can match you with a clinician suited to your situation. You can read more about each psychologist and their focus areas on their individual profiles.

Who We Support

We work with people across the lifespan, from age 10 through to adulthood. Clients come to us for support with a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, grief and loss, stress, adjustment difficulties and relationship challenges.

You do not need to have everything figured out before you reach out. Whether you are managing something specific or simply feel that life has become harder to navigate, our psychologists can help you understand what is happening and what support may help.

Our Psychology Services in Newcastle

Alongside individual therapy, we offer services that support both our clients and the wider professional community. Our main services include:

  • Individual therapy: private, confidential one-on-one sessions for young people and adults from age 10, tailored to what you want to work on.
  • Assessments: cognitive and adaptive assessments for adults, adolescents and children over the age of six, supporting a comprehensive understanding of intellectual abilities, daily functioning and developmental strengths and challenges. ADHD assessments are available for adults and adolescents.
  • Clinical supervision: support for provisional psychologists working towards registration, and for practitioners seeking ongoing professional development.
  • Training and workshops: information sessions and professional development for organisations, delivered by our clinical psychologists and shaped around what your team needs. Sessions are developed in consultation with you rather than run from a fixed program.

A Safe and Inclusive Space

Feeling comfortable is an important part of therapy. We are committed to providing care that is respectful, inclusive and free of judgement. Esteem Psychology proudly welcomes people of all backgrounds, identities and experiences, including the LGBTQ+ community. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work, and pay our respects to Elders past and present. Our goal is for everyone who comes to us to feel seen, safe and supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a general psychologist?

All psychologists in Australia are registered with AHPRA and complete a minimum level of training. Clinical psychologists have completed additional postgraduate study and supervised practice focused on assessing and treating mental health concerns, which means they hold an endorsement in clinical psychology. At Esteem Psychology, our clinicians are endorsed clinical psychologists, reflecting advanced training in working with a broad range of presentations across the lifespan.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist at Esteem Psychology Newcastle?

No, you do not need a referral to book with us. Many people contact us directly and arrange an appointment without seeing anyone else first. If you do have a referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on a set number of sessions each year. Eligibility varies between individuals, so it is worth discussing your situation with your GP.

Are all your psychologists clinical psychologists?

Yes. Every psychologist at Esteem Psychology is registered with AHPRA and holds an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology.

Do your clinicians offer telehealth?

Yes. All of our clinical psychologists offer appointments by secure video or telephone, as well as in person at our Hunter Street rooms in Newcastle.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

There is no single sign that means you should see a psychologist. People usually reach out when something is affecting them, whether that is a specific difficulty like anxiety or grief, or a more general sense that things have become harder to manage. If something has been weighing on you, or daily life feels more difficult than usual, talking with a clinical psychologist can help you make sense of what is happening and work out what support may help. If you are not sure whether therapy is the right step, you are welcome to contact us and we can talk through your situation first.

Can you help children and teenagers?

Yes. Our clinical psychologists work with children, adolescents and adults, and several have particular experience supporting younger clients and their families. Therapy for children and teenagers is adapted to their age and stage, and parents or carers are often involved in the process where appropriate. If you are unsure whether therapy suits your child, you are welcome to call and talk it through before making a decision.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Your first session is mostly about getting to know you. Your psychologist will ask what has brought you in, a little about your background, and what you are hoping for from therapy. There is no pressure to share more than you feel ready to. Together you will begin to shape a plan for how to move forward. Many people find that even the first conversation brings a sense of clarity and relief.

Are psychology sessions confidential?

Yes. What you discuss with your psychologist is private and kept confidential, in line with professional and legal standards. There are a small number of situations where a psychologist may need to share information, such as where there is a serious risk to safety, and these limits are explained to you early on. Protecting your privacy is central to how we work, and we are always happy to answer questions about it.

How much do appointments cost, and can I claim a rebate?

Fees depend on the type and length of your appointment. Our standard consultation fee is listed on our Fees page, and we will confirm the exact cost of your appointment when you book, so there are no surprises. If you have a GP referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be able to claim a Medicare rebate for eligible sessions. Some private health funds also offer rebates for psychology, depending on your level of cover. A Medicare rebate and a private health rebate cannot both be claimed for the same session. Eligibility varies, so we recommend checking with Medicare or your fund directly.

What concerns do your psychologists support clients with?

Our psychologists support people with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, grief and loss, adjustment difficulties, stress and burnout, trauma, and relationship challenges. Because every person is different, we focus on understanding your individual situation rather than fitting you into a category. If you are not sure whether we can help with what you are experiencing, please get in touch and we can guide you towards the right next step.
