Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist in Newcastle?
No. You can book directly with Esteem Psychology without a referral. If you would like to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP first, which sets out a number of rebated sessions each calendar year.
What is the difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychologist?
All psychologists in Australia are registered with AHPRA. A clinical psychologist has completed further postgraduate training and supervised practice in the assessment and treatment of mental health presentations, and holds an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology. Every psychologist at Esteem Psychology is a clinical psychologist.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Your psychologist will ask about what has brought you in, your history and what you would like to be different, and will talk through how therapy might work for you. There is no pressure to cover everything at once.
Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. Appointments can be held by secure video or telephone, which suits people who work long hours, travel for work, or live outside the Newcastle CBD. Telehealth sessions attract the same Medicare rebates as in-person sessions when you have a valid referral.
Do you see children and adolescents?
Yes. Some of our clinical psychologists work with children and adolescents as well as adults. Contact us and let us know the age of the person seeking support and we will let you know which clinicians currently have availability.
Where are you located and is there parking?
We are at Level 5, Suite 2, 57 Hunter Street, Newcastle NSW 2300, in the Newcastle CBD. Street parking and nearby public car parks are available, and the light rail stop and local bus stops are a short walk away.
How do I make an appointment?
You can book online through our booking system, call us on (02) 4926 4198, or send a booking enquiry through our contact page. We are currently accepting new clients.
