How we can assist you


Frequently Asked Questions

The Esteem Psychology Online Pandemic Clinic is available to anyone in Australia seeking psychological assistance in relation to pandemic-related psychological health and adjustment difficulties.

All appointments are 30 minutes.

In order to access bulk-billed appointments, you must:

  • Hold a valid Australian Medicare Card;
  • Be referred under a Mental Health Care Plan by:
    • a medical practitioner, either as part of a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, or as part of a shared care plan or as part of a psychiatrist assessment and management plan; or
    • a specialist or consultant physician specialising in the practice of his or her field of psychiatry; or
    • a specialist or consultant physician specialising in the practice of his or her field of paediatrics.

You will be required to provide your Medicare card details and a copy of your Mental Health Care Plan prior to your appointment if you would like to access bulk-billed sessions.

This information will be stored securely in our online practice management system (Halaxy).

If you are not accessing this service using a Mental Health Care Plan, you will be charged the private rate of $85.

No referral is necessary if you are accessing these services privately.

Online Bookings

  • Book Online
  • Select whether you would prefer a Telehealth (video) or telephone appointment
  • Select a specific clinical psychologist using the drop-down menu, or choose the next available appointment
  • Select your appointment time
  • Complete the booking details form
  • Upload your Mental Health Care Plan / GP referral (for bulk-billed appointments only)
  • Wait for your appointment confirmation email

Please ensure that you have your Medicare details and Mental Health Treatment Plan referral ready.

Online appointments

  • You will receive an email with a link to your online session prior to your appointment
  • Click the email link at the time of your appointment
  • You will enter an online waiting room and your psychologist will connect with you when available
  • Please ensure that you are on time for your appointment
  • Please ensure that you are in a private and confidential environment for your appointment

Telephone appointments

  • Your clinical psychologist will call you at the time of your appointment on the number you provide at the time of booking
  • Please ensure that you are available to speak to the psychologist when they call you for your appointment
  • Please ensure that you are in a private and confidential environment for your appointment

There is a cancellation fee of $40

This is chargeable if you:

  • Do not provide 12 hours’ notice of cancellation (we will send you an SMS reminder text 24 hours before the appointment so you can easily let us know by SMS whether you are still able to participate in your appointment)
  • Do not connect to your online appointment within 15 minutes of your appointment time
  • Do not answer your phone within 15 minutes of your appointment time when the clinical psychologist phones you (multiple attempts will be made if we are unable to reach you initially)

When you book your appointment, you will be asked to provide your credit card details in order to secure the booking.

You will not be charged at the time of booking.

Your card will only be charged

  • The cost of your appointment at the end of your session if you are a private fee-paying client (does not apply to bulk-billed appointments)
  • A $40 cancellation fee if you do not provide sufficient notice of cancellation (see above)

Your card details will be stored in our secure encrypted online practice management system (Halaxy)

You may request to have your credit card details removed from our system at any time by emailing us. (Please allow time for your request to be fulfilled by your clinical psychologist. We will provide you confirmation once your details have been removed).

Online and telephone services will be provided by Clinical Psychologists who are located in physical settings where privacy and confidentiality will be maintained.

Your Clinical Psychologist will be located in either a private office at our Newcastle practice, or a private home office.

Only one Clinical Psychologist will be present in the room where your online or telephone appointment is taking place.

Online sessions will be conducted via an encrypted online telehealth platform, Coviu. This is a third-party provider of secure online telehealth services for healthcare providers. This online platform has been approved by the Australian Psychological Society with regard to privacy and online security. Please see Coviu if you would like information about the security of this online platform.

Contact and clinical information will be collected and stored in our encrypted online practice management system, Halaxy.

If you are accessing bulk-billed services as part of a Mental Health Treatment Plan, your clinical psychologist is required by Medicare to provide treatment reports to your referring doctor regarding your progress. Please discuss with your clinical psychologist if you have any questions or concerns regarding correspondence with your referring doctor.

  • The availability of these services will be limited based on the availability of our clinical psychology team, and will be offered on a first-booked-first-served basis.
  • These services are being offered for a limited time, and will be discontinued when a) Medicare discontinues the relevant item numbers and/or b) the pandemic has ceased.
  • These services are specifically being provided for the purpose of supporting individuals who are psychologically impacted by the pandemic due to adjustment difficulties and/or acute stress reactions to illness and/or isolation and/or grief/loss.
  • If an individual receiving these services continues to experience difficulties that persist beyond the pandemic, we will recommend that the referring doctor facilitates a referral to an appropriate local service that can continue to provide therapy or other appropriate treatment.
  • The Esteem Psychology COVID-19 Pandemic Telehealth Clinic is not a suicide crisis service or an acute mental health service. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or significant mental health difficulties, please contact your GP, local mental health services and/or other suicide support services.
